Xbox on PlayStation: Surprisingly Best?

With “Gears of War: Reloaded”, one of the largest Xbox classics in a repolired form has been playable on a Playstation for the first time yesterday. And like a detailed graphic analysis illustrates, it is also a Sony console that delivers the best result in graphics and performance.

Has been since yesterday „Gears of War: Reloaded“ Available, a revised version of the Xbox classic “Gears of War” published in 2006, which offers a lot of technical improvements, including a 4K resolution, up to 120 FPS, HDR support with VRR, improved shadows, textures and more.

But the really special: For the first time, a game of the “Gears of War” series is also playable on a Playstation, since “Gears of War: Reloaded” is also available for the PS5. A fact that too Creator Cliff “Cliffyb” bleszinski delightedwhich can now share “a large part” of his “legacy” with even more people.

And while “Gears of War” could only be played on the Xbox consoles at the time, a playstation is now delivering the best result-the PC left out. This is now possible from a detailed graphic analysis by Digital Foundry (via Wccftech).

PS5 Pro delivers the best overall picture

Basically, according to the technology experts, “Gears of War: Reloaded” delivers good performance on all consoles. With a standard 60 FPS mode and an unlimited 120-FPS mode, there are two performance options on each platform.

PS5 and Xbox Series X in 60-FPS mode achieve an internal resolution of 1440p, which is scaled up to 4K with FSR 3.1.3, while it falls to 1080p in 120-FPS mode. The Series S, on the other hand, runs with 1080p at 60 fps by default and falls to 720p at 120 FPS.

“The best results, without exception”, deliver the PS5 Pro: “The 60-FPS mode now runs with 1620p, highly scaled to 4K, while 120 Hz maintains the 1440p of the 60-FPS mode of the other consoles,” explains John Linneman from Digital Foundry. What is special, however, is that the PS5 Pro PSSR uses instead of FSR and Sony’s upscaling technology provides a significantly better result.

“It is the case that this combination of a slightly higher number of pixels and PSSR creates a significantly better overall picture on the PS5 Pro and thus makes it by far the best console compared to the other consoles,” said Linnemann’s conclusion.

Performance: Xbox Series X trumps the PS5

As for the performance, “Gears of War: Reloaded” runs very stable in 60-FPS mode on all consoles and without visible fluctuations. Differences are only visible in 120-FPS mode: Here, depending on the console, the performance fluctuates between 70 and 120 frames per second.

As expected, the PS5 Pro cuts better than the normal PS5, while the Xbox Series X has an advantage over the Series S. In 120-FPS mode, however, the Series X also has a performance advantage compared to the standard PS5.

An important note also affects the variable refresh rate (VRR): While it works perfectly on the Playstation consoles, it leads to jerking on the Xbox. For this reason, Digital Foundry recommends using the 60-FPS mode on the Xbox until the problem has been solved.

Gears of War Reloaded: Tests and evaluations are there - buying?

Finally, Linnemann also explained that the PC version of “Gears of War: Reloaded” can “be pushed even further” thanks to DLSS and Ultra-Wide monitor support. In addition, the performance of the new edition on the PC is now much better, since the problems in which the CPU slowed down the game was resolved. But the console versions would still offer a “sharp, attractive” experience.
