And it’s like anything, like you have to take aggressive and bright risks for you to win,” Sabins said.

The Mountaineers are preparing for a three-game series against the Tigers,a format that allows for more focused strategy compared to the regional rounds. Having navigated a potentially longer regional weekend in just three games, West Virginia aims to capitalize on the condensed series.

Pitching Strategy Key to Success

A critical aspect of West Virginia’s preparation is the pitching staff. Sabins faces key decisions regarding his pitchers, notably beyond the first two games. Griffin Kirn and Jack Kartsonas are slated to start games one and two, respectively. However, the strategy for a potential game three remains uncertain. The question looms: Could Robby Porco, who struggled in his previous start, be called upon again?

Sabins acknowledges the need to balance aggressive play with calculated risks.While an all-in approach is suitable for elimination games, misjudgments in earlier games could jeopardize the series. “It’s definitely an interesting dynamic in that tournament format when you can survive to the next day. But this is essentially a three-game series. So this is how we’ve played the entire season,” Sabins said.

So you have to keep going. You have to keep coming after people’s throats, and the other team needs to feel that heat, and then great things can happen, like it did in the regional,” Sabins explained.
