Long before her first daughter was born, Gemma knew what she would name her. However, the name she gave her second daughter caused her despair.
Gemma Gené (40) from Barcelona had early ideas about what she would name her children. “As an artist, I love colors and one day I decided that if I ever had a daughter, I would name my daughter Yellow,” Gemma told Ipaper.
After Yellow she became pregnant again. “I wanted a color name again, like with my first daughter. That was a big concern for me throughout my pregnancy.” Gemma shortlisted the names Purple, Lavender and Lilac. But everyone she interviewed didn’t like the sound of the name Purple. So she chose Lilac.

But regrets about the name soon arose. “I just couldn’t name her Lilac. He’s cool and beautiful. But he just doesn’t suit my daughter.” This feeling continued. “I had such trouble with the name. I literally couldn’t sleep at night and cried so much about it,” said Gemma.
The suffering was so great that she finally hired a lawyer to have her daughter’s name changed. Her youngest daughter is now called Purple. Gemma is happy. “Changing the name was the best decision I ever made.”
Name change – This is how it works in Germany
In order to have your first name changed in Germany, you must submit a written application to the name change authority (usually the registry office or residents’ registration office) at your place of residence. You must provide an important reason for this and submit the necessary documents such as ID card and birth certificate. The authority examines the application and decides whether the change is sufficient and whether it is reasonable for the general public.
