World Cup Badminton Finals: Historic German Victories

by Archynetys Sports Desk

A final day full of milestones: Shi Yuqi crowns himself for the first time, Malaysia cheered over his first gold medal in mixed, Akane Yamaguchi pulls the same with Carolina Marin, and SEO/KIM set the highlight of her dominant year.

The final day of the Badminton World Championships 2025 in Paris offered drama, emotions and historical premieres. Five finals – five Asian winners.

Mixed: Malaysia’s first title

Right from the start, Malaysia wrote history. Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei defeated the Chinese Jiang Zhen Bang/Wei Ya Xin with 21:15, 21:14 and thus secured the first mixed title for their country at a World Championship. Just three years after the triumph of Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik in the men’s doubles in Tokio, Malaysia celebrated the second World Cup gold coup in its history.

For Chen/Toh it was a story of resilience: it was only in spring that they had a sporting separation, but came together again and now wrote the biggest chapter in their career.

Women’s double: China remains unbeatable

In the women’s doubles, the top of the world from China prevailed again. Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning, the current number one in the world, defeated Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan from Malaysia in a high -class final with 21:14, 20:22, 21:17. Despite the defeat, Tan/Thinaah wrote history: A Malaysian women’s double had never won a World Cup medal before.

Women’s singles: Yamaguchi with a historical triple

Akane Yamaguchi set another exclamation mark in the women’s singles. The 27-year-old Japanese gave Chen Yu Feu, who was still kinked in yesterday’s semi-finals, no chance at 21: 9, 21:13 and thus won her third World Cup title after 2021 (Huelva) and 2022 (Tokyo). She pulled the same with Carolina Marin, who had also become world champion three times.

Yamaguchi dominated the final from the start, played tactically clever, variable and with an iron precision. For Chen Yu Fei, on the other hand, only silver remained-and the bitter realization that her big dream of the World Cup title remains unfulfilled again.

Men’s singles: Shi Yuqi finally makes it

The most emotional finale delivered the men’s singles. Shi Yuqi, who had already been in the final in 2018 and was then slowed down by injuries and setbacks, finally fulfilled the dream of the world championship title at the age of 29. In a gripping duel, he struck defending champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn (Thailand) after 75 minutes with 19:21, 21:10, 21:18.

Shi previously had to ward off two match balls in the semi -finals against the Canadian surprise man Victor Lai – his dream almost had burst. But on Sunday he showed the ripe and mental strength that made him a champion. For China it was the first gold medal in the men’s singles since Chen Long 2015.

Men’s double: SEO/KIM complete your year of dominance

The last chapter of the final day wrote South Korea. Seo Seung Jae and Kim Won Ho defeated the Chinese pairing Chen Bo Yang/Liu Yi confidently with 21:17, 21:12. Already in the semi -finals they realized the Danes Astrup/Rasmussen with 21:12, 21: 3.

For SEO, after winning the title in 2023 with Kang Min Hyuk, it is already the second World Cup title in the men’s double, for Kim the first. The partnership of the two has a special story: they performed together in 2017 and won the Korea Masters. But then their paths separated. They only came together again in early 2025, and at the Malaysia Open they won the title-the beginning of a year full of dominance, which they continued with victories in the Super 1000 tournaments in Birmingham (All England) and Jakarta. Now they also wear the World Cup crown.
