(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Han Nam-jik = The World Association of Athletics Federations announced that it had filed criminal charges against two employees and a contract consultant for embezzling 1.5 million euros (about 2.5 billion won) over several years.
The federation said on the 31st (Korean time), “We discovered embezzlement during the annual audit. One employee suspected of embezzlement has already left the organization, and the contract with one remaining employee and consultant has been terminated. We will use all legal methods to recover the amount embezzled by the three people.”
Reuters identified former federation chief operating officer (COO) Binish Kochar and former broadcasting station chief Jace Rhodes as those involved in the embezzlement case.
“Many organizations cover up embezzlement cases and go only as far as firing officials. This allows criminals to continue their fraud and theft in new organizations,” said Sebastian Coe, president of World Athletics Federation. “Our federation will take the pain to right this wrong.”
