Wolf Concerns: National Information Point Launched

by Archynetys News Desk

For example, the website explains how to recognize a wolf: the animals are larger than most dogs, they have a thick neck and full tail. Around the wolf’s mouth the fur is often white and the ears are short and set far apart. It is also described what sound wolves make and why.

There is also information about where and how the predators live, how farmers can protect their animals against the wolf, and what you should do if you want to go into the forest safely with your children and/or animals and encounter a wolf.

RTL Nieuws previously made this video about this:

Incidents involving wolves may occur more often in the spring, when adult wolves have cubs to protect. There is also information about this on the website, as well as a link to current advice about nature reserves where the wolf has been seen or where an incident has occurred.

‘Great concerns’

According to State Secretary for Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature Jean Rummenie, there are ‘major concerns about the presence of wolves’ in the Netherlands. “So it’s good that people have a place to go with their questions.” This can be done via a contact form on the website. An 0800 number is also available.

Last summer, several incidents involving a wolf took place in the Netherlands. For example, a runner was caught by a wolf in the Hoge Veluwe National Park. A hiker was also bitten on the Den Treek estate in Leusden. Nearby, at another time, a child was grabbed by a wolf.

This year, killing permits were issued for those wolves, but hunters have still not been able to shoot them dead. The information point also contains information about the protected status of the wolf.

The National Wolf Information Point is part of the National Approach to Wolves. BIJ12, which monitors wolves in the Netherlands, is responsible for implementation. The information point was established by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature and the Dutch provinces.
