Man Fakes Death, Travels Europe, Returns Home Facing Charges
A Wisconsin man, Ryan Borgwardt, is facing charges after a shocking revelation: he faked his death and spent months traveling Europe while authorities searched for him.
The story began in August 2024 when Borgwardt went missing after a kayaking trip on Green Lake. A months-long search ensued, involving local, state, and federal agencies who assumed he had drowned.
However, in a shocking twist, authorities announced in November that they believed Borgwardt had staged his death and gone missing intentionally. They learned he had communicated with a woman from Uzbekistan and had journeyed to Europe.
Elaborate Escape Plan
Borgwardt’s plan was meticulously crafted. He intentionally planted evidence to mislead investigators, including discarding his phone and staging an overturned kayak in the lake.
Court documents revealed that Borgwardt had extensively researched how to disappear, studying lake deaths, travel logistics, and strategies to avoid detection. He even purchased a new bicycle and backpack to aid in his escape.
He managed to traverse borders, traveling from Canada to Paris before ultimately ending up in Georgia. He ultimately sent a video to the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office proving he was alive, a move that prompted his eventual return to Wisconsin.
Facing Consequences
Borgwardt was apprehended upon his return and charged with obstructing an officer. He appeared in court, where a judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf. He was released on a $500 signature bond.
Green Lake County is seeking restitution for the significant resources spent on the search effort, estimated at $35,000 to $40,000. Sheriff Mark Podoll stated that Borgwardt expressed remorse for the wasted resources.
What Drives People To Faked Deaths?
This case raises questions about the motivations behind such extreme actions.
What compels someone to abandon their life and consequences, faking death and embarking on a journey into the unknown? Experts suggest various factors can contribute, including:
- Escaping Debt or Legal Troubles: Individuals facing financial difficulties or legal complications may see faked death as a way to disappear and start fresh.
- Break from Relationships: A desire to escape a toxic relationship or challenging personal life can lead some to seek anonymity through a faked death.
- Mental Health Struggles:
Underlying mental health issues, such as severe anxiety or depression, may contribute to impulsive and erratic behavior, including faking death.
The Impact of Faked Deaths
Faked deaths have devastating consequences for everyone involved:
- Families and Loved Ones: Those left behind often experience intense grief and emotional turmoil, prolonging their suffering while searching for a missing loved one.
- Law Enforcement: Resources are squandered on extensive searches, diverting manpower and attention from other critical cases.
This can also strain community trust and safety.
