Devastating Windstorm and Heavy Rain Surge Through Jembrana, Bali, and Mojokerto, East Java
Jembrana. On Sunday, a formidable windstorm accompanied by heavy rain battered Jembrana Regency in Bali and Mojokerto City in East Java, leading to significant damage to properties and causing severe traffic disruptions.
Jembrana, Bali: Homes and Roads in Ruins
The storm swept through several villages in the Negara and Melaya districts of Jembrana, destroying homes and blocking roads in its wake. Reportedly, numerous houses in Gilimanuk Village, including four neighborhoods, sustained damage, ranging from minor roof leaks to complete collapse.
“We received reports of house damages in four neighborhoods in Gilimanuk Village,” stated Village Head Ida Bagus Toni. At least 30 homes sustained damage, and residents were left to help one another in their repair efforts. One resident had to deal with the trauma of their entire house being torn apart by the fierce winds.
Travelers to this popular tourist area were also affected. Trees toppled along roads near a protected forest, blocking the main route between Denpasar and Gilimanuk. This disruption stranded numerous vehicles, disrupting the flow of tourism to the region.
In another affected village, West Tegalbadeng, 16 homes were damaged by the storm, adding to the widespread impact.
Mojokerto, East Java: Traditional Ritual Disrupted, Homes Destroyed
In Mojokerto, the powerful windstorm and heavy rainstorms caused extensive damage to homes and public infrastructure. At least one residence was completely destroyed when a large tree crashed onto it.
In Prajuritkulon District, the storm wreaked havoc on a stage built for an upcoming traditional village ritual. The stage, set up for a centuries-old ceremony, was completely destroyed by the fierce winds and heavy rain. As a result, residents had no choice but to cancel the event.

“We have no choice but to postpone the village ritual. The losses amount to Rp 70 million ($4,286), which we had already spent on the stage and meals,” said Hendra, a local resident.
Another victim, Irfan Mahmud, described how the storm ripped off his home’s roof and destroyed the canopy of his coffee shop. “The windstorm and heavy rain came suddenly. It didn’t last long but was strong enough to tear off the roof,” he shared his experience.

Community Resilience amid Devastation
Despite the widespread damage, thankfully, no injuries were reported in either region, underscoring the resilience of the communities affected.
Neighbors and volunteers in Jembrana have rallied to support one another in the repair efforts, highlighting the strong community bonds forged in the wake of adversity.
What’s Next?
The aftermath of this event is far from over. Local authorities and residents will need to collaborate to rebuild damaged homes and restore public spaces like the stage in Prajuritkulon District. Additionally, measures must be taken to ensure that such unexpected weather phenomena do not disrupt daily life and traditional events in the future.
The resilience shown by the communities in Jembrana and Mojokerto during this crisis is commendable. With continued support and proactive planning, these areas can recover and grow stronger.
