WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – A new thrift store called “Relove It Again” has opened at 1208 S Third Street to support the New Hanover Outreach Clinic, which provides dental care to people in the community who wouldn’t be able to afford it otherwise.
The New Hanover Outreach Clinic was formerly known as the St. Mary Health Center. The clinic previously operated on the Basilica of St. Mary’s campus but was evicted because church leaders said they needed the space for their growing Catholic school.
The clinic then moved to a location on 16th Street, but the new building has created new financial struggles for the organization.
That’s where the thrift store comes in. Clinic Director Laura Vinson said the thrift store space previously housed the Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity ReStore, which closed in September. She said she moved into the space two days after it closed.
“We’re 100% volunteer-based, so we’re trying to generate funds so we can support the ongoing clinic and you know, the clinic has been through a lot in the past year and a half. So, we feel like it’s bringing a lot of people closure. I think a lot of people feel like they want to support us,” Vinson said.
Vinson said opening a thrift store has always been a dream of hers for the past decade. With thrifting growing in popularity, she thinks it will be the perfect way to sustain the work she and other volunteers are doing at the clinic.
The store will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily starting Saturday, Jan. 10. The store is accepting household items as donations but is not accepting clothes, shoes or mattresses.
