The BJP’s victory in Delhi after a 27-year hiatus has fueled curiosity about who will be crowned the Chief Minister. The party’s selection process is shrouded in speculation, much like recent elections in various states.
Following a Proven Pattern
In the recent past, the BJP has invariably chosen an elected MLA as CM in Maharashtra, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. This trend suggests that Delhi may also follow a similar trajectory.
Potential MLAs
Several names have emerged as frontrunners:
- Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma, who defeated Arvind Kejriwal and whose father was CM three decades ago.
- Vijender Gupta, the former Lok Sabha member with the highest victory margin among BJP candidates.
- Shikha Roy, the only woman in contention, who defeated AAP’s Saurabh Bharadwaj.
- Satish Upadhyay, a former state unit chief.
- Manjinder Singh Sirsa, the party’s Sikh representative in the national capital.
Non-MLA Options
If the BJP chooses an individual other than an MLA, they could opt for one of their MPs or high-ranking party members. This includes:
- Virender Sachdeva, the state president who played a crucial role in ending internal strife within the party.
- Manoj Tiwari, Bansuri Swaraj, and Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, all prominent MPs.
The Purvanchali Factor
The BJP’s success in Delhi was partly attributed to voter support from the Purvanchal region, a significant demographic in future elections in neighboring Bihar. This may influence who is chosen to lead Delhi.
A Development-Oriented Leader
Given the urgency to deliver tangible results, the CM needs to be development-focused, capable of implementing policies that translate into improvements on the ground within six months.
Considering Caste Equations
The party may also consider appointing a deputy CM to balance caste dynamics, as was done in states like Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. This could help maintain harmony within the party.
Delhi’s Unique Context
With a smaller assembly of 70 seats, Delhi’s political landscape is compact and complex. The BJP will need to carefully balance its internal dynamics and stakeholder interests.
While predictions are speculative, one thing is clear: the BJP’s choice will significantly impact the political landscape of Delhi and potentially set a new direction for the country.
