Freedom Of The Press: Union Asks For Clarification…

The Union of Angolan Journalists said in a statement that the association marks World Press Freedom Day, celebrated today, with greater concern “given the ineffectiveness of the action of the Social Communication Regulatory Entity (ERCA)”.

Teixeira Cândido stated that “regulatory powers remain within the sphere of the executive, which violates what establishes the basic law of independent administrative entities”.

The SJA representative also asks for clarification on the assaults on the Union’s premises, on journalists and, the most recent case, which occurred with the director of the newspaper Folha8, William Tonet.

However, journalist Armindo Laureano understands that “the exercise of journalism is also linked to economic freedom, considering that socio-financial comfort supports the observance of professional ethics”.

The director of Novo Jornal also reveals that the country marks the date with an imprisoned journalist, Carlos Alberto, highlighted by the Journalists Protection Committee, therefore, “considers journalism to be a threatened and threatening profession“.

Biden Administration Halts Shipment Of Bombs To Israel,…

The recent decision by the Biden administration to pause a shipment of bombs to Israel has generated significant attention and controversy. The move comes as the administration raises concerns about how these weapons could potentially be used in densely populated areas, specifically Rafah, where more than one million civilians are currently seeking shelter with limited alternatives.

While past administrations have been reluctant to withhold weapons from Israel due to long-standing contracts and concerns about influencing Israeli policy decisions, this move highlights a growing emphasis on examining the humanitarian impact of such transfers.

Protecting Innocent Lives

The concern raised by U.S. officials is centered around ensuring that weapons intended for defense purposes do not exacerbate civilian casualties or further escalate tensions in conflict zones like Rafah. This heightened scrutiny applies not only to bombs but also Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) kits,
