White House Aide Condemns Los Angeles Immigration Raid Protests as “Insurrection”

LOS ANGELES – Senior White House aide Stephen Miller on June 7 characterized the protests in downtown Los Angeles against federal immigration raids as an “insurrection” against the United States.
The demonstrations followed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in the city on the night of June 6, which resulted in the arrest of at least 44 individuals for immigration violations. Helmeted police in riot gear confronted protesters during the tense evening.
“an insurrection against the laws and sovereignty of the United States,” Mr Miller,the White House deputy chief of staff,posted on X in response to video footage of the protests.
Mr Miller, known for his hardline stance on immigration, was reacting to images showing a large gathering of protesters in downtown Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) clarified that they had not made any arrests related to the exhibition itself.
FBI deputy director Dan bongino also took to X, stating that the agency was reviewing evidence from the protests.
“We are working with the US Attorney’s Office to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice,” Mr Bongino said.”The Right to assemble and protest does not include a license to attack law enforcement officers, or to impede and obstruct our lawful immigration operations.”
President Donald Trump had previously pledged to increase deportations and tighten security at the US-Mexico border, setting a goal for ICE to arrest at least 3,000 migrants per day.
However, the administration’s immigration crackdown has faced legal challenges and has been criticized for affecting legal residents, including some with permanent residency status.
News footage from June 6 showed convoys of unmarked military-style vehicles and vans carrying uniformed federal agents moving through Los Angeles streets as part of the immigration enforcement operation.
“Forty-four people (were arrested) on immigration charges,” Ms Yasmeen Pitts O’Keefe, a spokesperson for Homeland Security Investigations, told reuters on june 7.
The LAPD’s role was to manage civil unrest after protesters spray-painted anti-ICE slogans on a federal court building and gathered outside a jail where some detainees were believed to be held. The LAPD did not participate in the immigration enforcement itself.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass issued a statement condemning the immigration raids.
“I am deeply angered by what has taken place,” Ms Bass said. “These tactics sow terror in our communities and disrupt basic principles of safety in our city. We will not stand for this.”
