The Inspirational Journey of Thomas Packard: A Remarkable Defeat of Stage 4 Colon Cancer

Thomas Packard’s journey with Stage 4 colon cancer began asegem innocent enough. He experienced frequent bathroom trips and blood in his stool, attributing his symptoms to conditions like irritable bowel syndrome or ulcerative colitis. However, a colony doctor confirmed the worst fear—a diagnosis of advanced colon cancer. Packard’s story serves as a beacon of hope and determination for anyone facing cancer.

Learning About Advanced Colon Cancer

Packard shared that his GI specialist recommended a colonoscopy after seeing him for his symptoms. Upon reviewing the colonoscopy results, the doctor informed Packard of his severe diagnosis:

“The (GI doctor) had this really despondent look on his face and said, ‘I have no good way to say this. I have terrible news for you. You very likely have advanced colon cancer,’”

Packard’s world shifted in that moment. He described the overwhelming realization as “like an upside-down feeling.” The biopsy results were conclusive—Packard had adenocarcinoma, the most common form of colon cancer. Importantly, his cancer had spread to his liver, classifying his diagnosis as Stage 4 or metastatic cancer.

New Challenges and Hope

With children aged 5 and 8, Packard felt an urgent need to be near them while enduring his chemotherapy. He moved to Colorado, closer to his children and thus closer to prolier care. His new oncologist started him on systemic chemotherapy, with initial improvement in his symptoms suggesting the treatment was effective.

However, Packard needed more intensive treatment to reach a point where he could undergo surgery to remove the remaining liver metastases. It was then that he was introduced to High-Dose Liver Infusion (HAI) therapy. Unlike regular chemotherapy, HAI targeted chemotherapy specifically to the liver, minimizing the effects on other parts of the body.

A Transformative Treatment and Medical Disblockquote

HAI therapy coupled with systemic chemotherapy proved to shrink the tumors significantly. A CT scan revealed helpful results, boosting Packard’s hope that surgery could be an option. He underwent successful liver and colon surgeries in October and December 2023, respectively.

Packard’s journey was not without its emotional beats. The news of his diagnosis—which potentially gave him six months to a year to live—was devastating. Yet, his unwavering optimism and resilience led him to believe in the possibility of a cure.

A Path to Recovery and Awareness

By the end of 2023, Packard declared himself no evidence of disease. This was a remarkable turnaround considering his initial prognosis. Reflecting on his journey, Packard credits his multidisciplinary care team and the state-of-the-art HAI therapy for bringing hope back into his life.

Living Life to the Fullest

“I feel a lot of gratitude for all of the people who helped me get to this point,” Packard says. “I want to use this time that I have not just to enjoy my life and create great memories with my kids, but to give back and help others who are in this position.”

Packard continues to share his story, encouraging others to be proactive with their health. If you or someone you know is experiencing bowel changes or exhibiting symptoms of colon cancer, it is crucial to:
