This will once again be the case from December 2025. WhatsApp has indeed announced that eight smartphones will no longer be supported. This means that, on these phones, the OS (iOS and Android) are no longer updated. What prevents WhatsApp from guaranteeing user security.
The models affected by this ruling are:
-
Le Huawei Death 9 Pro
-
The Xiaomi Mi Note 2
-
And HTC 10 evo
-
The Sony Xperia XZ
-
The Xiaomi Mi 5 Pro
-
L’iPhone 6s
WhatsApp reminds that, to function, the application needsAndroid 5.0 or neweror models that can receive text messages or calls. On iPhone, you need iOS 15.1 or newer. Remember that, in this list, we find smartphones which have no longer received updates or security patches since 2020 (notably the Samsung S7), or since 2021 (the Apple 6s).
If your smartphone is in this listsome (not very practical) choices are still available to you: you can use the web version of WhatsApp; change messaging; or save your data and buy a newer phone, or one compatible with new WhatsApp updates.
Whatever happens, WhatsApp will notify you by sending you a notification. And you can, in theory, always discussbut without taking advantage of conversation encryption.
