Meta Platforms announced on Tuesday that a new translation function for the messaging service WhatsApp will be introduced. The aim is to facilitate communication across language boundaries for the more than three billion users.

The translations will initially be available on Android devices in six languages and on iPhones in 19 languages. Further languages should follow in the future.

“The news translation was developed to protect the privacy of your conversations. Therefore, the translation takes place directly on your device, so what WhatsApp has no access to it,” said Meta in a blog post.

Users can hold a message down for longer and then tap on “Translate” to display any message in a different language. The function is available for both private and group chats and for channel updates.

Android users also have the option of activating the automatic translation for a total of chat, so that future messages will be translated by default.
