In Wertheim, a woman caused millions in damage when pulling out of a parking space, including driving into a valuable container. Insurance could cover the costs.
In mid-January, a woman in Wertheim (Main-Tauber district) caused damage worth around 1.2 million euros when pulling out of a parking space with her car. According to the Association of Insured Persons, the 22-year-old probably does not have to pay for the damage. It could be completely covered by insurance. The case has also been closed for the police.
The insurance coverage should be sufficient
Since the beginning of the year, the minimum coverage for property damage in motor vehicle liability insurance has been 1.3 million euros. If the material damage caused is within the agreed coverage amount, the insurance will cover the entire amount. The Association of Insured Persons explained this when asked by SWR. A personal contribution arises if the agreed coverage amount is not sufficient.
However, the Association of Insured Persons and the ADAC Württemberg, among others, recommend a flat-rate coverage amount of 50 to 100 million euros for motor vehicle liability insurance. This means you are adequately covered even in the event of serious damage. In principle, motor vehicle liability insurance only covers damage caused to others. Damage to your own vehicle in the event of an accident caused by yourself is covered by fully comprehensive insurance.
Coverage amount for motor vehicle liability insurance
Motor vehicle liability insurance is mandatory and is intended to ensure that victims are compensated even if the person who caused an accident cannot pay or would be financially ruined by the victim’s claims. The consumer advice center and the ADAC, among others, recommend concluding a contract with very high coverage, preferably 100 million euros. That sounds like a lot, but in the case of serious injuries the claims could easily run into the millions. Such compensation that the insurance company has to pay to accident victims can, among other things, be for loss of earnings, compensation for pain and suffering or a lifelong pension in the event of occupational disability.
No police investigation after accident in Wertheim
In mid-January, the woman crashed into another car while pulling out of a parking space. In her fright, she stepped on the accelerator again and drove into a charging station. She then drove through a fence and crashed into a container in which a high-quality power storage unit with a control system was installed. The container and its contents were damaged. This alone caused damage of around one million euros.
The police are no longer investigating the Wertheim case because there were no injuries and no administrative offenses, said a spokesman for the Heilbronn police headquarters. The 22-year-old was not drunk or taking drugs when the accident occurred. Even if this had been the case, insurance would have covered most of the damage. According to the Association of Insured Persons, the personal contribution in this case is a maximum of 5,000 euros per violation.
