WEIRTON, W.Va. — The city of Weirton is currently under mandatory water conservation, a measure that began on December 18. The situation escalated on Friday, stirring genuine concern among residents.
Water Crisis Intensifies with Line Breaks
The Weirton Area Water Board reported several breaches in water lines across the city, notably a critical crack in a 12-inch mainline on Walnut Street, adjacent to the Mary H. Weir Public Library. Although the primary line is now repaired, the city’s water infrastructure remains fragile and requires cautious management.
City Utilizes External Resources for Assistance
City Utilities Director Butch Mastrantoni has negotiated a unique agreement with Cleveland Cliffs, securing their water facility to assist Weirton’s struggling system. A pump is now being installed to allow the Cliffs Water Plant to gradually and carefully re-pressurize Weirton’s system, minimizing the risk of further damage.
As of now, Municipal Plaza and neighboring downtown areas experienced significant water shortages for most of the day. While the immediate break is fixed, conservation is still essential to prevent similar situations.
Mandatory Boil Order Continues
Given the unstable state of the water system, a mandatory boil order remains in effect indefinitely. Residents are advised to boil water before consumption until the system fully stabilizes and re-pressurizes using the Cleveland Cliffs facility.
Water Distribution Efforts
The city has initiated water distribution efforts to aid affected residents. Bottled water is distributed at the Weirton Fire Department Headquarters in Municipal Plaza, as well as at the County Road Station on Main Street and the Gilson Avenue Station on Cove Road.
City Manager Shares Optimistic but Cautious Outlook
Weirton City Manager Mike Adams expressed cautious optimism regarding the gradual return to normalcy. “We’re coming back slowly,” Adams stated. “I’m cautiously optimistic, but it’s going to take some time. It’s going to take some patience. It’s going to take some conservation for the next while.” This emphasis on conservation underscores the need for continued vigilance in managing and utilizing water resources.
