Waymo, the autonomous car transportation company from Alphabet (Google), announced that its robotaxis will circulate fully autonomously in Miami starting this Tuesday and will begin to do so in the coming weeks in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Orlando, before picking up passengers in 2026.

“Operations begin today in Miami and will extend to the four remaining cities in the coming weeks, before opening our doors to passengers next year,” the company reported in a statement on Tuesday.

In the case of Miami, this fleet of robotaxis had been in operation for months to map the roads, but operated with a safety driver to correct possible failures and did not accept passengers.

Waymo currently operates autonomously in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Phoenix, Austin and Atlanta.

In the statement, the company maintained that its robotaxis “are improving road safety in the cities” where they operate, “with an 11 times lower participation in collisions with serious injuries compared to human drivers.”

This announcement comes a week after the company announced that it has begun offering freeway rides in Los Angeles, Phoenix and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Several companies are competing in the US to offer commercial transportation services with fully autonomous vehicles, including Waymo, Tesla and Zoox (Amazon subsidiary).

But Waymo appears to be the most advanced and is at least two years ahead of Tesla’s robotaxis.
