Water Outages Disrupt Christmas Celebrations Across West Cork
Several households in West Cork were left with no option but to change their Christmas day plans and spend their holiday at the homes of relatives due to unexpected water outages.
On Christmas Day, Uisce Éireann reported that their crews were actively repairing a burst water main, which could cause supply disruptions to Shannonvale, Ballinascarty, and the surrounding areas.
Shannonvale, a village near Clonakilty, has experienced persistent problems with its water supply. A park in the area has been rendered unusable for the past 27 years due to sewage issues.
Despite repair workers resuming water supply on Christmas morning, a local resident pointed out that this was the third outage in the area within a week, indicating an ongoing problem.
Multiple Outages Impact Daily Life
Alan Dromey, chair of the Clonakilty clean-water committee, explained that a housing estate in Shannonvale relies on the Uisce Éireann line. In the week leading up to Christmas, this estate experienced three water outages.
These interruptions mean that homes are without water, and they also render the road in poor condition.
According to Dromey, some affected residents had to change their plans and celebrate Christmas dinner with relatives.
“Additionally, the lack of running water for washing and showers in the days leading up to Christmas forced residents to rely on others for support,” Dromey told The Echo.
“While infrastructure improvements are planned for the area, these cannot proceed until the recurring water issue is resolved,” he added.
Crews Respond Quickly Despite the Holiday
Dromey expressed gratitude to the employees at Uisce Éireann,承认 they came to work early in the morning on Christmas and restored water supply by afternoon.
“It’s terrible to be without water, and it’s also awful for them to have to come out on Christmas morning,” he said. “In fairness to them, they were very quick, so we really value them.
Dromey acknowledged the severity of the ongoing issues and expressed hope that the recent outages would be the last of the season. He also noted that improvements to the road surface and infrastructure have been planned, but these upgrades cannot occur until the fundamental water issues are addressed.
Water Repairs Continue Across the Region
The disruptions in water supply did not affect only Shannonvale. Uisce Éireann workers were also on duty in the northside of Cork city on Christmas day, working on a burst water pipe in Glanmire.
Community Resilience and Ongoing Solutions
Despite the challenges, the community of West Cork displayed resilience, adapting their holiday plans as necessary. These incidents have underscored the critical importance of reliable water services and the need for sustained investment in local infrastructure.
As Dromey highlighted, while plans are in place for future improvements, the present focus should remain on resolving the current water supply issues.
Further action and support from both utility providers and local authorities are essential to ensure that such disruptions do not occur again, enhancing the quality of life for residents in West Cork.
