China’s Shenzhou 18 Crew to Return Home After Six Months in Space
China’s Shenzhou 18 crew is ready to return to Earth after more than six months aboard the Tiangong space station. Astronauts Ye Guangfu, Li Cong, and Li Guangsu have been living on the space station since April, completing their mission and are scheduled to touch down near Jiuquan tomorrow.
Shenzhou 18 Space Mission Overview
The Shenzhou 18 mission is one of China’s longest-duration space missions to date. The astronauts have been conducting a variety of experiments and tasks while aboard the Tiangong space station. They have conducted emergency drills and captured video footage, providing valuable scientific insights.
Living Conditions and Mission
The astronauts have been living in a unique environment at the Tiangong space station, which is roughly 20% as massive as the International Space Station. The space station has been continuously operated and expanded, with plans to add more modules.
China’s Space Stations: Tiangong and International Space Stations
China’s Tiangong space station is designed to provide a permanently occupied environment in space for research and development. It is China’s primary space activity platform for scientific experiments, and the country has shown a commitment to expanding the station with an additional double T-shape configuration by adding three new modules. Tiangong is also set to receive a Hubble-class space telescope to enhance its capabilities.
Shenzhou 19 Crew Changeover
The trio from the Shenzhou 18 mission greeted the incoming Shenzhou 19 crew aboard Tiangong on Oct. 30. Commander Ye officially handed over control of the orbital outpost to the Shenzhou 19 commander, marking the fifth such orbital changeover since the space station’s completion.
Return to Earth
The astronauts aboard the Shenzhou 18 spacecraft are set to return to Earth at around 12:00 p.m. EST on Nov. 3. They are expected to land in the Dongfeng landing area near Jiuquan spaceport. The return will be another nighttime landing, and preparation teams are ready with infrared thermal imagers for tracking.
