Ver.di Announces Warning Strikes Across North Rhine-Westphalia Insurance Sector
The trade union Ver.di has called for a third round of warning strikes in the North Rhine-Westphalia private insurance industry after collective bargaining talks stalled. Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Münster are the focal points of the industrial action.
More than 1,000 workers are expected to participate in rallies across the region, as the union seeks to pressure employers to improve thier offer during the ongoing wage negotiations. The strikes follow unsuccessful talks between Ver.di and the employers’ association of insurance companies in Germany e. V. (AGV),which represents the insurance industry.
According to Ver.di,the employers’ latest proposal remains insufficient for the approximately 160,000 employees in the sector. Further strike action is planned in other federal states on Wednesday.
Dagmar Paasch of Ver.di North Rhine-Westphalia stated: “While the employers report strong results in the first quarter, there is little to hang with the employees. Although they have developed these results, the employees have so far only received an inadequate offer. With the expansion of the warning strikes, we are making a clear signal that we are calling for a fair recognition of the services rendered.”

The insurance companies have proposed a 4.8 percent tariff increase, followed by an additional 3.3 percent from September 2026, over a 28-month term. The union argues that this offer fails to adequately address the loss of purchasing power due to recent inflation, potentially leaving real income below 2020 levels.
