Art Theft: Warhol’s "Reigning Queens" Silkscreens Stolen in Netherlands

Two iconic silkscreens by Andy Warhol have been stolen during a break-in at the MPV Gallery in the Netherlands. The theft, which occurred overnight, has shocked the art world and law enforcement officials who are currently investigating the incident.

Stolen Artworks

The artworks taken include two of Andy Warhol’s "Reigning Queens" silkscreen prints featuring Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Margrethe II. These works were part of a series of 16 silk screens, created by Warhol in 1985, that depicted Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and Queen Ntombi Tfwala of Eswatini.

Two additional prints from the series were abandoned near the scene of the crime. The gallery owner shared with Dutch broadcaster NOS that the thieves attempted to steal four works but had to leave behind two of them due to space constraints in their vehicle.

Gallery Break-In and Damage

The incident took place at the MPV Gallery in the North Brabant province. Local police revealed that there appeared to have been some form of explosion causing significant damage to the gallery and adjacent buildings. The thieves reportedly fled the scene in a car.

Andy Warhol’s Legacy

Andy Warhol is widely considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. His work, particularly his iconic silkscreens, remains a significant part of the modern art canon. With Warhol’s "Reigning Queens" pieces now stolen, art enthusiasts and connoisseurs are doubting the safety of similar high-profile art pieces stored in public galleries and museums.

Calls for Caution

With high-profile thefts becoming increasingly common, this incident serves as a stark reminder for galleries and museums worldwide to tighten their security measures. CCTV, reinforced locks, and advanced alarm systems should be standard additions to protect such valuable pieces.
