Voyager 1 Uses Backup Radio Transmitter

NASA’s Voyager 1 Scout Resorts to Backup Radio Transmitter;communs Reestablished

NASAgunned Command to Activate Voyager 1’s Heater

NASA’s Deep Space Network (DSN) sent a command to Voyager 1 triggering it to turn on one of its heaters. Incidentally, this command set off a series of interlocking events leading to a brief communication pause.

Briefly Halted in Protective Mode

Voyager 1 ghosted out of communication briefly as it activated its fault protection system. This state aims to conserve power by shut down non-essentials. As a result, its primary X-band radio transmitter turned off.

Secondary S-band Radio Transmitter Kicks In

With the primary transmitter off, Voyager 1 switched to its more power-efficient secondary option, the S-band radio transmitter. This switch was the first reported use of this secondary transmitter in four decades.

The Distant Signal

Despite updating to a less efficient transmitter, Voyager 1 was hard to detect due to the vast distance and feeble signal. Eventually, it was pinpointed, and the team managed to turn it back on, reconnecting with Voyager 1.

An Ageing Titan in Space

Voyager 1’s dramatic journey began in 1977. Its interstellar exploits resulted in worn-out systems and increasing numbers of glitches over the decades. Even after crossing the heliopause, it keeps sending valuable cosmic data.

Resuming Normal Operations

Now that communication with Voyager 1 has been reinstated, scientists plan to approach the actual cause of the shutdown. Initial focus is on the fault protection system, with researchers aiming to eliminate repeats.
