In the final stretch of the campaign, the leading figures of the PS and AD turn the spotlight on the female vote. Pedro Nuno Santos says that next Sunday’s elections are decisive for women’s rights. Luís Montenegro guarantees true equality of opportunities.

The secretary general of the PS stated, in an interview with RTP, that the women have always been important to the party, unlike AD, from his perspective. “The PSD never valued the role of women in society. We value and want to continue to value and defend women,” she maintained.

Asked about the number of women who have not yet decided on their vote, Pedro Nuno Santos recalls that “the major issues regarding women’s rights were always achieved with Socialist Party governments”.
They are the ones who have been hampered in their career progression throughout their lives., because they are usually always looking after the house and the family. That’s why when we invest in the free daycare network, or in pre-school, we want to give more opportunities to our children, but also to their mothers, to have their careers and professions”, he highlighted.

Referring to the recent proposal for a new referendum to reverse the abortion law, made by the vice-president of the CDS-PP, Paulo Núncio, without mentioning his name, Pedro Nuno Santos stated that the right-wing parties “boast creating difficulties in accessing voluntary termination of pregnancy”.

We value and want to continue to value and defend women (…) Women who work at home, work outside the home and deserve to continue to be respected and see their role valued”, stressed the socialist general secretary.
AD “looks” at women
Shortly after the PS secretary general’s interview with RTP, the AD leader dedicated, at a Barcelos rally, a large part of his intervention “to Portuguese women”, considering that they have been “a strength, an encouragement” in this campaign”.

Addressing women, Luís Montenegro stated that the AD program “looks at them too”, in health, education, pensions.

“To the women of Barcelos, the women of Braga, the women of Portugal, I want to assure you: we are really going to take important safe steps to guarantee true equality of opportunities”, he added.

O PSD president framed “gender equality” as “a fundamental pillar of equal opportunities” and highlighted that in Portugal there is still “negative discrimination regarding the retribution of women’s work and effort compared to men
