Urgent Call for Donors: Municipal Hospital Spearheads Vital Initiative
The Municipal Hospital “Dr. Héctor M. Cura” is actively seeking volunteer blood donors and bone marrow registry participants in a crucial upcoming drive. This initiative aims to bolster local blood supplies and expand the national registry of hematopoietic progenitor cell (CPH) donors, offering hope to patients in need of life-saving transplants.
Event Details: Location and Timing
The blood and bone marrow donation drive will be held this Wednesday, April 9th, from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the World Harvest Headquarters, located at Av. Del Valle 2928. The Hemotherapy Service Collection Team, in collaboration with World Harvest personnel, will be on-site to facilitate the process.
Alternative Donation Options
For those unable to attend the external collection, the Hemotherapy Service at the Municipal Hospital (accessible via Av. Sarmiento) welcomes donors Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM.
Understanding Bone Marrow Donation: A Commitment to Global Solidarity
Registering as a bone marrow donor is a profound act of solidarity. The National Registry of CPH Donors, operating under Incucai (as mandated by Law 25,392), is connected to Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide (BMDW), a network encompassing over 60 countries. This global collaboration ensures that potential donors in Argentina can help patients anywhere in the world.
Bone marrow donation is governed by the principle of international solidarity: every person registered in the Argentine Registry is willing to donate CPH to anyone in the world who needs it.
While registration is voluntary, it represents a long-term commitment. Potential donors should carefully consider thier decision, understanding that while they can withdraw at any time, their initial commitment offers a beacon of hope for patients battling life-threatening illnesses. According to the World Marrow Donor Association, over 40 million individuals are registered as potential donors worldwide, highlighting the global effort to find matches for those in need.
Registration Process: Simple and Straightforward
The registration process for the CPH donor registry mirrors that of a standard blood donation. It involves providing informed consent, allowing for genetic analysis of a small blood sample. This genetic information is then added to the National Registry’s database. it’s notable to note that it can take approximately six months for your registration to be fully processed due to the necessary genetic studies.
How Matching Works: A Lifesaving Connection
Once registered, your immune data is stored in the National registry. If a patient with a matching genetic profile requires a bone marrow transplant, you will be contacted. If you are in good health and reaffirm your commitment, the registry will coordinate a meeting with the medical team to discuss the next steps.
Eligibility Requirements for Blood and Bone Marrow Donation
to donate blood and register as a CPH donor, you must meet the following criteria:
