Vitamin D could play a crucial role in reducing the risk of heart attack when given in individually tailored doses. A recent study presented at the American Heart Association annual meeting in New Orleans shows that patients with heart disease who received personalized doses of vitamin D were able to reduce their risk by more than half. These findings underscore the importance of tailored medical care.
The study, conducted by researchers at Intermountain Health in Salt Lake City, included 630 adults with heart disease. Participants were divided into two groups: one group received individually adjusted doses of vitamin D, while the other group received usual care. The results showed that personalized dosing resulted in a significantly lower risk of heart attacks.
A notable aspect of the study is that more than 85% of participants had vitamin D levels below 40 ng/mL at the start of the study, which is considered too low by many experts. Researchers adjusted doses to keep participants’ blood levels within a range of 40-80 ng/mL. This resulted in a 52% reduction in heart attack risk compared to the control group.
Interestingly, the benefit of vitamin D therapy was limited to reducing the risk of heart attack. Other heart health problems such as heart failure or stroke were not significantly affected by vitamin D supplementation. The researchers emphasize that further clinical studies are needed to confirm the benefits of targeted vitamin D therapy.
The results of this study are preliminary and should not be considered definitive until published in a peer-reviewed journal. Still, they offer valuable insight into the potential benefits of personalized vitamin D therapy for people with heart disease.
