Virginia Macari-Smurfit Celebrates Successful Spinal Surgery Recovery
Virginia Macari-Smurfit, the reality star from Dublin Wives, has shared her feelings of relief after a challenging yet successful spinal surgery to address a rare condition known as Conus AVM.
Virginia’s Health Ordeal
In October 2024, Virginia faced a severe health crisis that saw her rushed to the hospital, mere months after marrying Peter Smurfit. Her condition, Conus AVM, involves a cluster of blood vessels near the spine, posing risks of permanent damage to the spinal cord.
The Life-Saving Surgery
On Wednesday, Virginia took to social media to thank the medical team who performed her surgery. She shared a snapshot from her hospital bed, expressing her gratitude: “We are so relieved and elated that the spinal surgery is over and it was a success. The most incredible neurological team and even two robots worked on me.”
“They saved my life,” she continued. “It was filmed and recorded to teach the medical academics of the future as it was such a rare case. With pleasure is all I can say.”
“I am exhausted now. Time to heal and get back to living normally. Thank you God. I love you so much. I love you, Peter, and thank you to everyone for the kind messages.”
Courage and Openness
In her Instagram stories, Virginia shed light on the reality beyond the glamorous life portrayed on social media. “Life isn’t all about cute dresses and hot cars and sexy holidays we see every day on Instagram. Sometimes real life shit happens too. That is life,” she wrote.
She added, “Deep in my heart I know that all will be well. I know it because God and my family are around me.”

Virginia also reflected on her experience with MRI scans, a necessity in her recovery journey. “Have any of you had an MRI? Awful being in one for 1.5 hours, here goes my fifth one,” she shared, demonstrating her humor and resilience.
A Miracle Recovery
Virginia recounted the critical moment when she was rushed to the hospital, noting it was by sheer luck that Peter took her to a specialized center. “The doctors immediately told us that it is a miracle that I am alive. I could have died instantly when the AVM burst,” she said.
“They also asked my husband how did he know that the hospital he brought me to specialised in my rare condition. He didn’t. It was just pure luck that we live close to it.”
