Virginia to Allow seniors, adults with Conditions to Get COVID-19 Vaccine Without Prescription
A new standing order will expand access to the updated COVID-19 vaccine.
Virginia seniors and adults with underlying health conditions will soon be able to get COVID-19 vaccines without a prescription, thanks to a new standing order from the state’s health commissioner. This move aims to clarify and simplify vaccine access for vulnerable populations within the state.
State Health Commissioner Dr. karen Shelton informed Senators on the joint Subcommittee on Health and Human Resources Oversight on Wednesday that she would issue a standing order on Thursday. This order will enable Virginians over the age of 65, or adults with underlying conditions, to obtain a COVID-19 vaccine without needing a prescription from their doctor.
The declaration follows some confusion regarding vaccine access requirements in Virginia. Earlier reports suggested that a prescription would be necessary for all individuals seeking the updated COVID-19 vaccine.
Though, after those reports, some people said they received an updated COVID booster without a prescription from Walgreens. When Melissa Hipolit contacted the state to verify the story, she learned from the Virginia Department of Health Professions that Walgreens submitted a protocol to the Board of nursing authorizing pharmacists to administer vaccines to adults.
According to a VDHP spokesperson, this protocol serves as an acceptable form of medical authorization, eliminating the need for an adult patient to obtain a prescription.hipolit has inquired why the state did not communicate this method of vaccine administration earlier and is awaiting a response.
Impact of the New Standing Order
The standing order is expected to streamline the vaccination process for eligible virginians, removing a potential barrier to access. By allowing pharmacists to administer the vaccine under the established protocol, the state hopes to increase vaccination rates among seniors and adults with underlying health conditions.
“This order will enable Virginians over the age of 65,or adults with underlying conditions,to obtain a COVID-19 vaccine without needing a prescription.”
Who is Eligible?
The standing order specifically targets two key groups: Virginians aged 65 and older, and adults with underlying health conditions. Individuals who fall into either of thes categories will be able to receive the COVID-19 vaccine without a prescription at participating pharmacies and other vaccination sites.
