Viminale & MIC: Protecting Italy’s Church Heritage

The agreement signed by ministers Piantedosi and Giuli in the archaeological complex of Villa Grande and Villa Piccola

The Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, and the Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, signed the agreement today for the definition of a common strategy aimed at expanding the use, promotion and valorisation of the cultural heritage owned by the Cult Buildings Fund, of which the Interior Ministry is the legal representative.

The protocol, which aims to increasingly integrate the assets of the FEC into the national museum system, was signed in the archaeological complex of Villa Grande and Villa Piccola, recently restored and located in the underground rooms of the Basilica of San Sebastiano outside the walls in Rome.

Present at the signing were Monsignor Pasquale Iacobone, president of the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology; Father Stefano Tamburo, parish priest of the Basilica of San Sebastiano outside the walls; the prefect Alessandro Tortorella, director of the central directorate of cult affairs and for the administration of the FEC; Massimo Osanna, general director of Museums of the Ministry of Culture and Luana Toniolo, managing director of the Appia Antica archaeological park.

The restoration works of Villa Grande and Villa Piccola involved the consolidation of the structures, the restoration of the wall paintings and mosaics, the installation of new lighting systems and the creation of a visit route that allows safe and fully legible use of the environments. Environmental monitoring systems have also been introduced to guarantee, over time, the best conservation of the decorated surfaces.

The action carried out by the Ministry of Culture through the Appia Antica Archaeological Park, in whose territory the Basilica of San Sebastiano and the underlying Villas belonging to the FEC fall, was financed with funds from the PNRR, as part of Investment 4.3 “Caput Mundi. Next Generation EU for large tourist events – The shared city”, for a total amount of one million euros.
