You may have noticed it already from the similar arrogant appearance in the photo above: the driving force behind VILLANELLE goes by the name Gallagher. Gene may say daddy and uncle to Liam and Noel respectively, but with his musical project he mainly tries to step out of his shadow. In the end it will probably not be a coincidence that the trio, just when Oasis is making waves again, releases its first songs… but oh well. Debut single “Hinge” already drew comparisons with Nirvana, among others, and the new “Measly Means” also throws in influences from The Smashing Pumpkins.
“Measly Means” builds on what he claims is the first riff that Gallagher ever wrote, with a hefty dose of English nonchalance on top. In itself the single does not have much to it, but that is where the individuality of VILLANELLE seems to hide; just straight forward rock with a grungy edge. In the chorus the Brit raises his voice a bit, which also creates a kind of recognizable melody. And so, all in all, “Measly Means” became a single that finds the middle ground between the radio-friendly and inaccessible of grunge. Add to that a touch of nepotism, and you will undoubtedly come a long way.
“Measly Means” is also the second single from a yet to be announced debut EP.
