Vijender Gupta: A Controversial Figure Returns as Speaker of Delhi Assembly

New Delhi:

Ten years ago, Vijender Gupta, a BJP leader, was thrown out of the Delhi Assembly amidst chaos following a heated exchange over derogatory remarks made by a BJP colleague, OP Sharma, against AAP MLA Alka Lamba.

Visuals showed Vijender Gupta, dressed in a pristine white kurta-pyjama, being lifted and twisted by several marshals. Despite his resistance, he was forcibly removed from the chamber.

Today, Gupta has returned to the Assembly as its Speaker after the BJP’s sweeping victory in the 2025 Delhi election. He retained his Rohini seat, which he has held since 2015.

Gupta’s Ambitious Agenda

Gupta’s return is likely to cause concern for the AAP, as he has vowed to table 14 pending Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports, which he claims will expose financial irregularities amounting to crores under the previous AAP government.

He has also criticized the AAP for blocking BJP MLAs’ efforts to present these reports, accusing the party of misleading the public with false promises.

The Marathon to Political Power

While Vijender Gupta’s campaign path seemed clear, Rekha Gupta emerged as a surprise winner. The first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh was appointed Chief Minister, marking another BJP milestone and making her the fourth BJP CMS of Delhi and the second woman from the party to hold the post.

Gupta shared her disbelief with NDTV, emphasizing that she was not expecting the leadership role when she began her day.

2015: A Memorable Chaos

In November 2015, the Delhi Assembly erupted in chaos. Ram Niwas Goel, the Speaker then in power, asked Gupta to leave the House until 4 pm following the altercation. When Gupta refused, the marshals were brought in to forcibly remove him.

Gupta accused the Speaker of partiality towards the AAP, then in power, and alleged that three BJP legislators had been abused and assaulted without any action taken.

AAP’s Silence

So far, the AAP has not responded to Gupta’s nomination, adding another layer of intrigue to the political landscape.

Verma’s Role

Parvesh Verma, a two-time former Lok Sabha MP, who had initially been expected to win the Chief Minister’s post, ended up as one of the BJP cabinet members. Verma had proposed Rekha Gupta’s name for the position.

As political dynamics continue to shift, the return of Vijender Gupta as Speaker promises to shape the legislative landscape and could potentially reignite tensions within the Assembly.

This is a significant turn in Delhi politics, setting the stage for what could be a contentious yet crucial period in the governance of the nation’s capital.
