Verstappen’s Secret mission: Conquering the Nordschleife
Between the high-octane weekends of the Miami and Emilia-Romagna Grands Prix, Max Verstappen, the reigning Formula 1 champion, traded his single-seater for a different kind of beast: a Ferrari 296 GT3. Piloting for his own Verstappen.com Racing team, managed by the experienced Emil Frey Racing, Verstappen embarked on a unique challenge at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife.
The “franz Hermann” enigma: Why the Pseudonym?
Intriguingly, Verstappen chose to compete under the alias “Franz Hermann.” When questioned about the unusual choice during a media day at Imola, Verstappen chuckled, As it had to be as German as possible!
He revealed that he personally conceived the pseudonym, with the NLS organization granting him permission to participate under the assumed identity.
The reason behind the pseudonym was strategic. Verstappen explained, That was mainly not to appear on the registration list. Otherwise, there would be all people at 8 a.m. if they have my name on the entry list would see.
He anticipated being recognized irrespective, but the alias helped maintain a degree of tranquility during the early hours of the test day. This highlights the intense scrutiny and attention that follows the F1 champion, even in his extracurricular racing endeavors.
Chasing Records and Gaining Experience
Speculation swirled around Verstappen’s lap times after the test day. While official times remained undisclosed, Verstappen confirmed that he surpassed the existing GT3 lap record in that configuration (7:49.5). However, he downplayed the record-breaking aspect, stating, Yes, I was faster. But for me it was not at all about improving a lap record or whatever. I just wanted to have fun and get to know the circuit better with my team. And of course with Emil Frey Racing, they had never been there before. Also for them it was a good day to do a good day, we also had a good day, we also had a good day. Good.
He also confirmed that he adhered to the NLS Balance of Performance (BOP) regulations during his record-setting run.
This experience serves a larger purpose: preparing for a potential future participation in the grueling 24-hour race at the nordschleife. In the future I would like to do that, yes. That’s why I am already doing all these things, to prepare myself and gain experience. Then I don’t have to do all these things in the future.
This ambition aligns with a growing trend of F1 drivers exploring other racing disciplines, such as Fernando Alonso’s participation in the Dakar Rally and various endurance races.
Verstappen faces the challenge of acquiring the necessary racing license for the Nordschleife. We are currently talking to the organization about it. my schedule is of course very full, so those are things that we are currently discussing.
He hopes for an exception to the standard licensing procedure, which typically requires participation in slower racing categories. The negotiations are ongoing, with Verstappen expressing uncertainty about returning in September to complete the required racing rounds.
F1 on the Nordschleife: A Bridge Too Far?
Verstappen once harbored the ambition of tackling the Nordschleife in a Formula 1 car. However, Red Bull Racing deemed it too risky due to safety concerns. That was an F1 car indeed. This is GT3 and that is my passion. This year I naturally have a GT3 team and thus want to collect more information about it. in the end this is just in my own time.
He now acknowledges the impracticality of running a modern F1 car on the notoriously bumpy and challenging circuit. With the cars that we have now, that is indeed not possible. The circuit is far too bumpy for that and you have too much compression. To be honest, when I drove there, I thought the speed of a GT3 car was perfect. Everything that is faster would be a bit risky.
This outlook reflects a growing understanding of the limitations of current F1 cars on older, more demanding tracks.
