The dissident lawyer of Chavismo María Alejandra Díaz reported this Sunday in Colombia, after he denounced, earlier this month, that the Nicolás Maduro regime had refused to grant him a safe -conduct to leave under the diplomatic protection of Venezuela.
“Thanks to the efforts of the government of President Gustavo Petro, of Foreign Minister Yolanda Villavicencio, as well as the Milton Rengifo ambassador, and the collaboration of dozens of anonymous heroes, we managed to leave the residence of the Colombian ambassador to Caracas in Caracas and we are in Colombian territory safe and in the company of part of the family,” he said in a publication made in X.
He affirmed that now some time will be taken to “reflect” and rethink new objectives, “always having as north the defense and love of the Venezuelan homeland.”
On August 6, the Colombian government confirmed that it granted diplomatic asylum to Díaz on January 11, 2025.
Through a statement, he pointed out that asylum was granted after the dissident lawyer of Chavismo argued to be a victim of persecution for political and ideological reasons by the Venezuelan State.
The Colombian Foreign Ministry added that “the Government of Venezuela, through different diplomatic channels, has stated that, in the case of Mrs. Díaz Marín, the issuance of a salvoconduct is not necessary as long as no arrest warrant or open judicial process weighs on it.”
Díaz had denounced that Nicolás Maduro’s regime refused to grant him a safe -conductbecause, “according to them”, there was no persecution against him.
In November 2024, the Supreme Court of Justice imposed a fine on the lawyer to advise an appeal in which it was requested to order the publication of the disaggregated results of the presidential presidential ones of July 28, whose official result gave the victory to Nicolás Maduro.
