A Calling to Serve: From France to Senegal
For Dr. jean-Paul Velu, a retired dentist from France, fulfillment isn’t found in leisurely retirement, but in providing essential dental care to the peopel of kabrousse, a village in the casamance region of southern Senegal. His dedication, fueled by a desire to give back, highlights the profound impact individuals can have on underserved communities.
The Spark: Early Career adn a Budding Desire to Help
After graduating in Nancy and furthering his studies in the United States, Dr.Velu established a successful practice in Lorraine. However, his commitment to social obligation led him to create programs providing dental care to underprivileged populations.it is indeed in my nature to help others
, he explains, a sentiment that would eventually lead him to Senegal. This early initiative foreshadowed his later dedication to humanitarian work.
A New Chapter: Retirement and a Chance Encounter
Following a move to Saint-Raphaël and nearly two decades practicing in Fréjus-Plage, retirement presented Dr. Velu with an prospect for a new begining. A chance encounter with a dental technician, Jean-Claude Maurane, introduced him to the Doma Doma association, setting the stage for his humanitarian journey. Maurane believed Dr. Velu would be a great fit for the organization’s mission.
Doma Doma: Providing Essential Dental Care
Founded by dental surgeon françois Penot, Doma Doma focuses on providing crucial dental services to communities with limited access to care. In 2022, Dr.Velu and his wife, Florence, visited Kabrousse, and he was immediately drawn to the community and the association’s work. He joined Doma Doma, just as its founder began facing health challenges.
The need for dedicated volunteers became increasingly urgent. It is therefore quite urgent to find colleagues to take turns here and, from time to time, to give their time
, Dr. velu emphasizes, highlighting the ongoing need for dental professionals willing to contribute their skills. He typically spends about a month, twice a year,in Senegal.
The Rewards: Gratitude and Human Connection
Dr. velu finds immense satisfaction in his work with Doma Doma. During all my career, [I had] the desire to give back to people what the profession brought me. And in these places in southern Senegal, people are extremely grateful. We have the recognition in the smile and the gaze of the patients. Human relationships are so pure, so simple … values that we no longer find in our Western societies.
Unlike some perceptions of volunteer work, Dr. Velu stresses that the quality of care provided is not compromised. And I want to clarify that it is indeed not low-cost [care like] an average cabinet in France.
The focus is on essential treatments, relieving pain, and restoring smiles, making a tangible difference in people’s lives.
Making a Difference: Conservative Care and Immediate Impact
The dental care provided by Doma Doma primarily focuses on conservative treatments, addressing immediate needs and alleviating pain. By focusing on these essential services, the organization makes a significant impact on the overall health and well-being of the community.
