(AFP, Milan, 6th) When US Vice President J.D. Vance attended the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Milan today, he was booed by some spectators, but the US team was welcomed with warm applause when they entered the stadium.

When the American players marched into the stadium at the opening ceremony, Vance and his wife Usha applauded and waved the national flag. When the two figures appeared on the big screen at the San Siro Stadium, boos were heard.

During the parade, the Ukrainian team received the warmest applause. After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russian athletes who were sanctioned by the Olympics competed as neutrals and did not appear in the athletes’ parade.

Earlier today, hundreds of people protested in Milan against the visit of US Vice President Vance and the presence of some US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, who were here to help protect the US team.

Vance also met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni today. Meloni is also a conservative and has a close relationship with US President Trump. Vans praised the two countries for having “common values” during the meeting.
