Strengthening National Immunization: A Conversation in Artigas
In a concerted effort to bolster public health, the uruguayan Ministry of Public Health (MSP),in collaboration with key stakeholders including the State Health Services management, the university of the Republic’s Faculty of Medicine, and the Honorary Commission for the Antituberculous Struggle and Prevalent Diseases (Chla-EP),recently convened a vital discussion on vaccination strategies in the artigas department.
This initiative, a cornerstone of the National Immunization Strategy, brought together healthcare professionals and local leaders to update their knowledge on vaccination schedules across all age groups – childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. The dialog also served as a platform to address concerns regarding vaccine efficacy, safety protocols, and implementation approaches.
Combating RSV: A New Vaccine for Infant Protection
A central theme of the discussion was the ongoing influenza vaccination campaign and, crucially, the introduction of the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine for pregnant women. Pediatrician Maite Arana, from the MSP’s immunizations unit, highlighted the meaning of this new vaccine, launched in September of last year, in mitigating severe respiratory infections in newborns.
The idea is that the pregnant woman receives the vaccine between 32 and 36 weeks gestation and transfer the antibodies to the baby, avoiding serious complications, hospitalizations and fatal cases.Maite Arana, MSP Immunizations Unit
RSV is a common respiratory virus that typically causes mild, cold-like symptoms. However, it can lead to severe illness, especially in infants and older adults. According to the centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), RSV is the most common cause of bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia in children younger than one year in the United States. The introduction of this vaccine in Uruguay represents a proactive step towards safeguarding infant health.
Addressing Vaccination Access Challenges in Artigas
While uruguay boasts high vaccination adherence rates specific regions like Artigas face unique challenges in ensuring equitable access. These challenges were openly discussed during the meeting, with a focus on collaborative solutions.
Arana emphasized the importance of a networked approach, involving both public and private institutions, alongside dedicated health teams and community stakeholders,to overcome these barriers. This collaborative model aims to ensure that all residents, irrespective of their location or circumstances, have access to the life-saving protection offered by vaccines.
Uruguay has a high adhesion to vaccination, but in some territories there are specific access difficulties, which we seek to solve through network work between public and private institutions, together with health teams and social actors.Maite Arana, MSP Immunizations Unit
Commitment to Enhanced Vaccination Coverage
The meeting underscored the unwavering commitment of Uruguayan authorities to strengthen vaccination coverage across the nation. By prioritizing immunization efforts and fostering collaboration, the goverment aims to ensure that all eligible individuals recieve the necessary vaccines to protect themselves and their communities from preventable diseases. This proactive approach is crucial for maintaining public health and well-being in Uruguay.
