According to fire crews, while working, everyone was ordered to evacuate after the fire suddenly intensified on one side of the structure near the overhead offices.

Fire crews stated that some firefighters experienced first-degree burns and that equipment was damaged during the incident.

“This was one of the most dangerous and challenging fires in recent memory,” said a spokesperson for the Galax Fire Department. “I witnessed multiple near misses, first-degree burns on firefighters, and damaged gear that only comes from putting it on the line for our neighbors.”

A total of 14 agencies worked to put out the flames for a total of six hours.
