Lauri Markkanen‘s name has been linked to trade rumors for a long time, but so far the Utah Jazz management has remained steadfast. The Salt Lake City franchise has now changed its stance.
According to a report by Sports Illustrated The Jazz are “very open” to discussions about a possible deal. “Lauri Markkanen is the name I hear the most,” said insider Chris Mannix.
Utah rejected a trade offer from the Golden State Warriors in 2024 and speculated on a better deal, but this did not come. Markkanen and the Jazz have publicly and contractually committed themselves to each other several times in the past. The Finn is under contract for four more years after his extension last summer.
The forward came to Utah in 2022 as part of the Donovan Mitchell trade and started there, in addition to his first All-Star nomination, he was also voted Most Improved Player. In the 2024/25 season he averaged 19.0 points and 5.9 rebounds on 42.3 percent from the field – all lows of his Jazz time.
The phone in the front office surrounding CEO Danny Ainge and General Manager Justin Zanik will certainly ring more often in the coming months. The franchise wants to realign itself with young players like Ace Bailey, Walker Kessler and Keyonte George. It remains to be seen whether Markkanen will also play a role or whether the Jazz will sign additional talent in a trade.
