TL;DR

  • A new app called uTag lets you use Samsung SmartTags with any Android device.
  • The app is free to download but requires also installing a patched version of Samsung’s SmartThings app in order to function.
  • Most functionality has been replicated, including precision finding, while new features have been added like widget support.

When it comes to finding misplaced items, Apple’s Find My network leads the pack, offering both reliability and ease of use. Google’s attempt at creating a similar service with its Find My Device network fell short in many areas, particularly in urban areas. One developer tired of the inconsistency of third-party AirTag-like devices turned to Samsung’s tracking solutions. However, these tags are originally designed to work only with Samsung devices. Enter uTag, an innovative app that breaks this barrier and lets you utilize Samsung SmartTags with any Android phone.

uTag essentially mimics Samsung’s official SmartThings Find app, providing comprehensive tracking capabilities similar to those found in the Samsung ecosystem. Users can set up a Galaxy SmartTag2, monitor its location, trigger a ring from afar, adjust its ringtone, and customize button functions. Beyond just basic tracking, uTag alerts you to unknown SmartTags in your vicinity, notifies you of tags left behind or found, and even allows you to share tag information with family members. One of its standout features is support for precision finding, thanks to ultra wideband (UWB) radio compatibility, a feature still missing from Google’s network.
