Second-hand electric cars are becoming increasingly attractive. Compared to burners, they lose value faster and are already available for little money. However, buyers should pay attention to the condition of the battery.

Used e-cars are an “attractive alternative” for new cars or used combustioners, according to the TÜV association. “Models such as VW ID.3, Renault Zoe, Hyundai Kona Elektro or Tesla Model 3 are now available in large numbers, often as young used leasing contracts,” said the association. “More and more models are available and prices are falling.”

According to TÜV, electric cars continue to have a high loss of value: after three years, the residual value is often only in half or even less. “New model generations offer larger batteries, longer ranges and faster loading times,” said TÜV expert Robin Zalwert. “This means that older electric vehicles seem technically out of date.”

Falling new car prices and discounts also pressed the value of the used ones. However, buyers benefited from this: “You get modern technology at comparatively favorable conditions,” said the TÜV. A Tesla Model 3 is now often available for 18,000 to 20,000 euros.

Buyers should pay attention to the condition of the battery

When buying a used electric car, the auto experts advise you to pay particular attention to the condition of the battery, because it could be very expensive to exchange. Depending on the model, buyers would have to adjust to up to 20,000 euros. “The performance of the battery decides on the value and everyday suitability of a used electric car,” says Zalwert.

Zalwert advises for checking by an independent third -party provider. This usually costs between 100 and 200 euros. If the performance of the battery is 80 percent or more, “the vehicle is usually easily everyday and usable for many years,” he said.
