The system, originating from the descent of freezing currents from Canada and extending from the Rocky Mountains to Rhode Island, has put over 50 million residents under alert, with snow accumulations of up to 12 inches in Maine and interior New England, 5 inches in Albany and Syracuse, and up to 1 inch in northwest Ohio.

In the Appalachians, ice makes the roads dangerous and there are fears that it could cause blackouts. In recent days, the Hudson Valley and Upstate New York have been recording over 100 road accidents, some major thoroughfares were temporarily closed and several Connecticut counties suffered blackouts that left around 700 homes without electricity.

Schools in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Pennsylvania have closed. In New Jersey, Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency in five northern counties, urging citizens to drive carefully. Local authorities recommend following real-time alerts, preparing emergency supplies and limiting non-essential travel while The North of the USA is preparing to face an intense start to winter, with heavy snowfall and bitter cold and difficult road conditions.
