A Legacy of compassion: Pope’s Vision Takes shape

Following the passing of Pope Francis, his profound concern for the vulnerable children of Gaza is being realized through a unique initiative. Caritas Jerusalem, with support from Caritas Sweden, is transforming the Papamobile into a mobile health station. This project aims to deliver essential medical care to children in the Gaza Strip, where access to healthcare has been severely compromised.

Addressing a Critical Need: Healthcare in Crisis

Peter Brune, General Secretary of Caritas Sweden, emphasized the urgency of the situation: With the vehicle, we will be able to reach children who do not have access today, when the Gaza health system is almost fully collapsed. The mobile clinic is equipped for diagnosis, examination, and treatment, including rapid infection tests, suture kits, syringes, needles, oxygen, vaccines, and a medicine refrigerator. This comprehensive setup will enable medical professionals to address a wide range of health issues affecting children in the region.

Overcoming Obstacles: Humanitarian Access and Long-Term Commitment

The mobile health station is poised to begin operations as soon as the humanitarian corridor into Gaza reopens. For over two months, aid deliveries have been severely restricted, exacerbating the already dire conditions for children. Anton Asfar, Secretary General of Caritas Jerusalem, highlighted the importance of this initiative: This vehicle represents the love, care and closeness demonstrated by His Holiness for the most vulnerable, which he expressed throughout the crisis. He also issued a strong appeal for one immediate and lasting fire.

Caritas’ Enduring presence: A Network of Care

Caritas Jerusalem has a well-established history of providing healthcare services in Gaza, even amidst challenging circumstances. The organization currently employs over one hundred staff members in the field and operates 14 medical teams across the Gaza Strip. Twelve of these teams are strategically located in the southern regions, while two are actively serving Gaza City. This distribution ensures maximum coverage and accessibility of basic healthcare services throughout the region.

Our work in Gaza is a testimony of our unshakable commitment to the health and well -being of the community, even in the most arduous conditions.
