US Government halts Revolution wind Project Amid Security Concerns

By Amelia Green | WASHINGTON D.C. – 2025/08/23 09:46:11

The US government has ordered a halt to the Revolution Wind project, a large offshore wind farm that is already 80% complete. This marks the latest in a series of actions impacting wind energy initiatives.

Former President Donald Trump had previously voiced his opposition to wind power, stating in January, “We are not going to take the wind power.” He had also said last August that turbines “screw up the landscape”, “kill the birds” and “are noisy”.

The current governance is now following through on this stance. The order impacts a wind farm project off the northeast coast, where 45 of the planned 65 turbines have already been installed. The project was slated for completion by the end of next year.

The Revolution Wind project, which began construction last year, is intended to supply power to over 350,000 households in the State of Rhode Island, according to Orsted, the Danish energy company responsible for its construction.

Matthew giacona, director of the Ocean Energy Management Bureau (BOEM), issued a letter on Friday mandating the “stopping of any current activity” on the project for review. The letter stated that “Boem seeks to respond to concerns about the protection of national security interests in the united States”, without providing further description.

Possible Legal Challenges

Orsted released a statement indicating that they have “assessed all the options to settle the question quickly” including the use of “possible legal procedures”.

Following his return to the White House in January for a second term, Donald Trump has signed several decrees aimed at curbing wind turbine development. These measures include a freeze on operating permits and federal loans for all wind projects, both onshore and offshore.

Empire Wind, another large offshore wind project located off the coast of New York and developed by the Norwegian company Equinor, was also temporarily halted by the Trump administration in mid-April.
