Reduced trade volumes are impacting employment at the Port of Los Angeles, with fewer positions available for workers.

The Port of los Angeles, a critical hub for international trade, is experiencing a downturn in job availability, reportedly linked to the impact of tariffs on trade with the Asia-Pacific region. Recent data suggests a significant decrease in available positions, raising concerns about the port’s economic health.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the port saw only 733 positions available for 1,575 workers in a recent 25-day period. this information comes from Gene Seroka, executive director of the port of Los Angeles, who also noted that the port’s throughput for May was 25% below expectations.
Decline in Work Opportunities
“They were not dismissed, but they are far from working as much as before,” said mr. Seroka. “Since the entry into force of customs duties, and more notably in May, we have really seen the work to collapse”.
“As the entry into force of customs duties, and more particularly in May, we have really seen the work to collapse.”
Mr.Seroka attributes the decline in job opportunities to a reduction in the volume of goods moving through the port. This decrease is believed to be a outcome of tariffs impacting trade flows.
Port’s Significance
The port of los Angeles has consistently ranked among the top container ports in the United States as 2000. It plays a vital role in the California economy, with nearly a million jobs connected to its operations.
