US Government Shutdown: Record Length & Impasse

Today marks the 36th day of the shutdown in the US. That is a record, because the previous longest shutdown in 2018 lasted 35 days. Yet it does not seem that the American government will open again soon, as both Democrats and Republicans are standing their ground. Why does that happen and what are the consequences for ordinary Americans?
