the United States is reducing its diplomatic presence in Iraq, with non-essential US embassy personnel and their families being evacuated from Baghdad due to increasing security concerns, according to US government sources.

while officials have not specified the exact reason for the evacuation, it follows reports that Israel is prepared to launch an operation into iran, according to CBS, citing officials familiar with the matter.

These sources indicated that the US advised some Americans to leave the region partly over concerns that Iran might retaliate against US interests in Iraq. The evacuation occurs amidst stalled US talks regarding IranS nuclear program.

Diplomatic Efforts Continue Amidst Tensions

Despite the heightened tensions, US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff is scheduled to meet with Iranian officials for a sixth round of discussions on Sunday, according to CBS sources.

A US state department official stated,”We are constantly assessing the appropriate personnel posture at all our embassies. Based on our latest analysis, we decided to reduce the footprint of our mission in Iraq.”

Former President Trump addressed the situation at an appearance at the Kennedy Center, stating that Americans were advised to leave the region “as it might very well be a dangerous place, and we’ll see what happens”. He also reiterated the US stance against Iran developing nuclear weapons, saying, “We’re not going to allow that.”

Trump had previously expressed hope for a deal to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons but admitted growing uncertainty about Iran halting uranium enrichment. Earlier in the week, he had a “tense” 40-minute phone call with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has advocated for a military approach rather than diplomacy.

“We are constantly assessing the appropriate personnel posture at all our embassies.Based on our latest analysis, we decided to reduce the footprint of our mission in Iraq.”

Potential Retaliation and Regional Impact

The US proclamation comes at a critical juncture in nuclear talks, leaving uncertainty about whether it is a genuine concern or a strategic signal.

Iranian Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh has stated that Iran would retaliate against US bases in the region if talks fail and Trump orders military strikes against the Islamic Republic.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has also approved the voluntary departure of families of American military personnel from countries across the Middle East, including Kuwait and Bahrain, according to Reuters.

During a congressional panel testimony, the pentagon indicated “plenty of indications” that Iran was “moving their way towards something that would look a lot like a nuclear weapon”.

Iran maintains that its uranium enrichment program is for civilian energy purposes and denies seeking to build an atomic bomb.

The UK’s Maritime Trade Operations organization issued a warning about increased military tensions in the Middle East possibly affecting shipping. News of the US evacuation initially caused a 4% increase in oil prices due to concerns about regional insecurity leading to supply disruptions.

Approximately 2,500 US troops are stationed in Iraq, according to the defence department.
