Union Berlin achieved a liberating blow on the 26th matchday of the Bundesliga: the capital city team, recently under pressure after two bankruptcies, ended an impressive Freiburg series very late.

Liberation in Breisgau: 1. FC Union Berlin achieved an immensely important victory in the relegation battle in the Bundesliga. At SC Freiburg on Sunday evening, the capital city team won 1-0 (0-0) with a late goal and extended their lead over relegation place 16 to a comfortable seven points with eight games still to play.

Woo-Yeong Jeong (90+2) gave the Iron Men their first away win since the end of December with his goal in the final phase. Freiburg, eighth in the table, had to accept the end of an impressive home series: coach Julian Schuster’s team had previously remained undefeated 16 times in a row in their own stadium.

Union coach Steffen Baumgart had spoken of a “certain tension” in the run-up to the game given the recent negative run: “Of course we know that the results weren’t good,” he said. He changed his starting lineup to four positions compared to the 4-1 defeat against Bremen, including keeper Matheo Raab making his Bundesliga debut due to Frederik Rönnow’s foot problems.

At the beginning, the Iron team concentrated on defensive work and mostly left the ball to the sports club. However, they had a hard time looking for gaps and mainly tried from a distance: Captain Maximilian Eggestein (12th) and Cyriaque Irié (15th) each aimed too high.

Even as the game progressed, the action often took place in midfield, with Berlin waiting for moments of transition. But Freiburg was usually able to stop them right from the start. Highlights remained rare in the tactical encounter until the half-time whistle.

Nothing changed in the second half either. Derry Scherhant missed a free kick opportunity from a promising position after 54 minutes. Freiburg remained clearly superior and had more than 70 percent possession of the ball after around an hour, but Union continued to defend consistently – and suddenly had the opportunity to take the lead through Alex Kral (69th). Jeong had the last word.
