Uncle Luke for Congress? Rapper Teases Florida Run

by Archynetys News Desk

Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell is stepping away from coaching high school football as he prepares for a potential congressional run in his home state of Florida.

On Monday (Jan. 26), the 2 Live Crew member announced his resignation from his position as head coach at Miami Edison Senior High School, citing a possible return to politics as the primary catalyst behind his decision.

“Good morning. I am officially stepping down as Head Football Coach at Miami Edison Senior High School,” Campbell, 60, wrote in a statement posted to his X account. He went on to express gratitude to the players and colleagues he worked with during his tenure.

“I would like to thank the principal, athletic director, alumni president, board members, my coaching staff, and—most importantly—the players for giving me the opportunity to lead and serve at Miami Edison. Coaching at this historic school has been an honor.”

Campbell added that his departure was motivated by a desire to prevent his political ambitions from interfering with his responsibilities as a football coach, which he said would be a disservice to his players. “I do not want to shortchange the young men at Miami Edison while pursuing a congressional seat.”

If Campbell pursues a run for Congresshe is expected to challenge Democratic incumbent Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick in Florida’s 20th Congressional District.

Cherfilus-McCormick’s term has recently been mired in controversy. In November 2025, the 47-year-old was hit with federal charges for allegedly stealing $5 million in FEMA funds and making illegal campaign contributions. She is scheduled to be arraigned in February.

A lifelong football fan, Campbell began his coaching journey in Florida’s high school circuit in 2009, joining Miami Central as a linebackers coach and helping lead the team to its first state championship in school history.

The rapper and music executive later coached at Miami-area schools Northwestern, Norland, and Jackson before landing at Edison in 2018, where he helped transform the program from a perennial underperformer into a respected competitor.

“I believe we are leaving Miami Edison better than we found it,” Campbell said. “The program now has brand-new locker rooms, upgraded football facilities, and a strong apparel partnership with Adidas.”

In addition to his political ambitions, Campbell revealed he will focus his efforts on film projects, his work with Liberty City Optimist, and his new NIL venture Luke Sports.

If Campbell ultimately runs for Congress, it would not be his first foray into politics. In 2011, the controversial Hip-Hop legend ran for mayor of Miami-Dade County, finishing fourth with 11 percent of the vote.

Campbell is expected to make a final decision regarding a congressional run on Feb. 15, 2026.
