UN Chief: ‘Failure of Humanity’ – Global Issues

UN agencies have declared a famine in Gaza, a “man-made disaster” according to Secretary-General António Guterres. The integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis highlights the deliberate collapse of systems needed for human survival. Famine conditions are expected to spread, with over 640,000 people facing catastrophic food insecurity by September.

The UN emphasizes Israel’s obligations under international law to ensure food and medical supplies to the population. Agencies are calling for an immediate ceasefire, unimpeded humanitarian aid, and the release of hostages. The situation is exacerbated by damaged cropland and widespread displacement.

The UN human rights chief states that using starvation as a method of warfare is a war crime. Malnutrition among children is accelerating, with a important increase in acutely malnourished children identified in July. This marks the first time a famine has been officially confirmed in the Middle East region.
