The university of Magallanes (UMAG) Conservatory of Music is extending an invitation to young, aspiring musicians to join its 2025 Youth Orchestra. This initiative provides a free platform for musical growth, fostering local talent through collaborative orchestral practice. This is a fantastic opportunity for young musicians to hone their skills and experience the joy of playing together.

Who Can Apply?

This call is specifically targeted at individuals aged 12 to 18 years who possess skills in playing instruments such as the violin, viola, cello, double bass, or wind instruments. The youth orchestra serves as an essential stepping stone for students, offering their frist experience in orchestral performance and teamwork with musicians from diverse backgrounds.

Director’s Perspective: Nurturing Musical Growth

Gonzalo Fernández, Director of the University Conservatory, emphasizes the orchestra’s role in musical education: the Conservatory Youth Orchestra is the initial group training experience for our students. Since 2024, we’ve broadened its scope to include the wider community, welcoming young musicians from Punta Arenas and surrounding areas. It’s a complimentary activity, designed for those eager to create music collaboratively and enjoy a fulfilling experience.

The Benefits of Orchestral Participation

Nicolás Petrovich, teacher and director of the youth orchestra of the Conservatory, highlights the importance of group musical experiences: Every musician should experience making music together. Musical interaction, group study, rehearsals, and performances are fundamental aspects of musical development.

Participating in a youth orchestra offers numerous benefits, including improved musical skills, enhanced teamwork abilities, and increased self-confidence. Studies have shown that involvement in music programs can also positively impact academic performance and social development. For example, a 2023 study by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) found that students involved in music programs scored higher on standardized tests compared to their peers who were not involved.

Rehearsal Details

Rehearsals take place every Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Conservatory of Music, located at Avenida Bulnes 345. Participation is entirely free of charge.

Past Performances and Community Engagement

In the past year, the youth orchestra has actively engaged with the community, performing in various cultural, educational, and public venues throughout the city. Their repertoire is carefully selected to match the skill level and aspirations of the young musicians.

Spaces are limited, so early registration is encouraged.
